Client:

Village of Huo-Long-Gang
Wuhu City - Anhui Province - Peoples Republic of China

Location:

Road through Hulongong

Road:

Unpaved Road. Heavy Clay Soils.

Problem:

Rutting and wash boarding due to base failure — very dusty with road failures during rain — resulting in high maintenance and poor trafficability.

Soil Type:

Heavy Silty Clay     AAASHTO Classification A-7-6

Sieve Analysis % passing #40 mesh 96.7
% passing #60 mesh 90.1
% passing #200 mesh 87.3

Liquid Limit 40
Plastic Index 24

Application Rate:

0,012 liter/m2     CBR PLUS Classic

Treatment Objectives:

  • Increase the strength or bearing capacity of the base layer
  • Reduce the weakening of base layer due to moisture — particularly in the rainy period
  • Improve trafficability and reduce maintenance

Equipment:

1 Front End Loader
1 Water Tankers
1 Vibratory Drum Roller Compactor
3 Two Wheel Rotary Tillers

Construction Method:

As the in situ soil was poor soil, and as such not treatable with CBR PLUS, it was decided to bring in about 6 inches of soil, which showed a very high reactivity with CBR PLUS, to cap the existing road. This soil was spread in a 15 cm layer on top of the existing base.

The CBR PLUS was then applied in a mixture of 200:1 parts water to CBR PLUS. Numerous application of this CBR PLUS / Water Mixture alternating with pure water without product, was applied, until the top 150 mm had been treated, mixed, and had reached optimum moisture content. The layer was then mixed well by means of the rotary tillers. Using manual labour, the top 75mm was shaped into the road profile and compacted. After final shaping, the surface was finished with the vibratory smooth drum roller.

Due to very heavy rain on the day we completed the compaction, the first section was slippery and we added a thin layer of gravel onto the surface to provide a less slippery and more suitable riding surface. This section was then compacted again with the compactor.

For the second section this extra gravel was spread onto the surface and mixed in with the top 75 mm of the soil brought in. This mixing was carried out by means of the three rotary tillers. The purpose of this was to add more strength to the layer and provide a better wearing surface that was less slippery. The road was then shaped by means of manual labour and rolled with the compactor.

After completion the top layer was sprayed once a day for a week, to cure the top and allow the layer to dry out evenly.

Result:

The resultant road finished in a smooth surface with a fine gravel making up the surface. A smooth road surface that provides an excellent ride.
