LOCATION:

Country: Canada
Province: Alberta
Place: 7.5 km on Bessborough Road
Soil Type: Silty Clay: A-6
Road Type: Unpaved Road. Access road for farmers
Problem : Rutting due to base failure from heavy loads resulting in high maintenance. Poor trafficability in wet weather.

Treatment Objectives:

  • Increase the strength or bearing capacity of the base layer
  • Avoid having to use gravel to modify base layer
  • Reduce the weakening of base layer due to moisture - particularly in the spring thaw period.

Construction Method:

The surface was milled into the base layer by milling with a CMI RT 500 road-milling machine to a depth of 1.5 cm. The CBR PLUS was then applied in a mixture of 250 : 1 parts water to CBR PLUS to bring the moisture content of the soil to about 13%. The CBR PLUS was applied through the RT 500, which was milling to 150 and applying the water/CBR PLUS mixture in one pass. The soil, after milling, resulted in a finely grained homogenous layer with very even particle distribution. Finally the top was shaped and finished with a vibratory smooth drum roller.

During construction the soil was broken up into small (8-12mm) particles, and as a result the CBR dosing was very effective throughout the layer as well as the soil being easy to work with the grader. Compaction was quick and even, without any soft spots being left behind. The surface was sealed after two weeks with a double seal.

Result :

The resultant road finished in a smooth surface with good trafficability. Maintenance has been reduced significantly.
